Donald Trump hammers Republicans over debt ceiling

Donald Trump hammers Republicans over debt ceiling”

Say Republicans pass a spending bill without wall funding and Trump vetoes it.

Their feud boiled over on August 9, when the two reportedly got in a telephone cursing match, and it continued this week with the president bullying McConnell to tie raising the debt ceiling to funding his border wall.

Maine Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican who has been critical of the president, told MSNBC this week it was "too hard to say" if Trump would be the party's presidential nominee in 2020. That the president is doing campaign rallies rather than focusing on governing is another sign of his growing weakness.

"We are in the NAFTA (worst trade deal ever made) renegotiation process with Mexico & Canada".

"There's not a single senator in the majority who thinks we ought to change the legislative filibuster".

As President Donald Trump has become openly critical of McConnell for failing to pass health care reform, to the point where the New York Times reported the two hadn't spoken for weeks, McConnell continued to preach that legislative progress takes time.

This is clearly draining the man who views himself as the ultimate deal maker. As with most everything in his presidency, he is likely overplaying his hand. "There hasn't been a more divisive person in national politics since George Wallace", the former pro-segregation Democratic governor of Alabama. As the Huffington Post noted, experts pushed back against Trump during the campaign, saying that the wall would be unfeasible and too costly.

"Now, the obstructionist Democrats would like us not to do it".

In Trump's ideal world, Republicans would include money to construct a wall in their next government-spending measure, and that measure would pass the House and Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support.

Democratic congressional leaders aren't intimidated.

Other Republicans have meanwhile grown more assertive in their criticism of the president, following the furore triggered by his equivocal response to the violence at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia earlier this month. That could be a problem for Trump, who insists on funding for his border wall. Mexican officials, in no uncertain terms, have rejected Trump's absurd demand that Mexico pay for it.

The group claims the farm bureau's insurance customers are automatically charged a fee that enrolls them as members of the company's 501 (c) 4 lobbying arm, which spent almost $140,000 a year ago lobbying the Kentucky General Assembly.

But as Hart sees it, Trump's hits on Flake present a distraction from the president's agenda. It undoubtedly makes him feel better, but it doesn't really accomplish anything. Congress also will have about 12 working days from when it returns to approve spending measures to keep the government open. In other words, right up Trump's alley.

Congressional leaders remain publicly unworried.

Lawmakers have until September 30 - 12 legislative days after their return from August recess - to pass funding through both chambers of Congress.

Asked Friday what the president meant to accomplish by attacking members of his own party, press secretary Huckabee Sanders responded: "I think it's clear that the end game is for Congress to do its jobs and actually pass legislation". "I don't think it's in our interest to do so", Ryan said.
