North Korea fires short-range missiles in latest test

North Korea fires short-range missiles in latest test”

It seems that these unidentified projectiles are the latest weapons tests for the country that has been rapidly expanding its nuclear weapons and missile program.

Kim says North Korea's large-sized artillery rockets blur the boundaries between artillery systems and ballistic missiles because they create their own thrust and are guided during delivery.

The JCS says the South Korea and US militaries were analyzing the launch.

North Korea's latest test comes at the same time as US and South Korean forces participate in joint military exercises on the Korean Peninsula.

Benham says the military continues with a more detailed assessment.

South Korean security analyst Kim Dong-yub said Saturday that South Korea's assessments don't contradict USA military evaluations that identified the launches as short-range ballistic missiles.

The US military's Pacific Command said that it had detected three short-range ballistic missiles, fired over a 20 minute period.

The White House said President Trump was briefed on what happened and "we are monitoring the situation". Hours later North Korea had said it was "carefully examining" plans to strike Guam. They say the North may limit its reactions to low-level provocations like artillery and short-range missile launches.

Two of the missiles flew about 150 miles while the other one appears to have blown up nearly instantly. If the South Korean assessments are correct, the North might have conducted tests to expand the range of its 300-millimeter multiple rocket launchers, which are believed to have a radius of up to 200 kilometers (124 miles), Kim said.

Earlier this month Trump had warned that North Korea would be met with "fire and fury", if it continued with its threats.

A statement released by the state-controlled Korean Central News Agency denounced Washington and Seoul as "warmongers" and said the annual drills were "provocative". Dave Benham says the two missiles flew about 250 kilometers (155 miles).
