North Korea fires three missiles into sea

But on Saturday, true to recent form, North Korea test-fired three short-range ballistic missiles, with Kim apparently thumbing his nose at calls for him to send Washington a signal that he is serious about nuclear disarmament.

Tillerson had hoped that this could be the beginning of the signal from Pyongyang the U.S. had been looking for.

Kim says North Korea's large-sized artillery rockets blur the boundaries between artillery systems and ballistic missiles because they create their own thrust and are guided during delivery.

Under the new measures, North Korean nationals will not be allowed to establish any new company in China, whether it is a joint venture with a Chinese partner or a firm with foreign capital.

The JCS says the South Korea and US militaries were analyzing the launch.

Businesses established by Pyongyang overseas - including restaurants and trading companies - are a crucial source of foreign exchange for the Stalinist regime.

North Korea's escort command has an exclusive responsibility to protect Kim, who, according to state media, has been targeted for a US and South Korean decapitation operation.

In addition to sanctions adopted by the United Nations Security Council this month, Japan and the United States have imposed punitive measures against worldwide firms, including those from China, for doing business with the hermit state. The North routinely says it will never give up its weapons programmes, saying they are necessary to counter perceived USA hostility.

Earlier on August 5 the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution imposing new sanctions against the rogue nation. The US characterized them as short-range ballistic missiles.

But he added, "We continue to want the Kim regime to understand (there) is a different path that he can choose". While the allies insist the command post exercise is purely defensive in nature, Pyongyang has long viewed it as an invasion rehearsal.

But earlier this week the rhetoric appeared to be cooling - at least on the American side - as Trump expressed optimism about North Korea on Tuesday, saying of leader Kim Jong Un, "I respect the fact that he is starting to respect us".
