North Korea missile launch fails”

Guam officials said they were immediately notified about the three failed short-range missiles launched by North Korea Saturday morning, and the launch posed no danger to the island.

North Korea had walked back from the threat to lob missiles toward Guam, but there had been concerns that hostility will flare up again during the Ulchi-Freedom Guardian drills between the allies that run through August 31. "The second missile launch at 12:07 p.m. appears to have blown up nearly immediately", the statement read.

The launches came a month after the North tested its second intercontinental ballistic missile, raising fears about the rapid progress of its nuclear weapons program.

"The military is keeping a tight surveillance over the North to cope with further provocations", the South Korean defence ministry said.

Tensions had eased since a harsh exchange of threats between Pyongyang and Washington after US President Donald Trump had warned North Korean leader Kim Jong-un he would face "fire and fury" if he threatened the US.

The U.S. Pacific Command has since revised its evaluation of the missile launch, now reporting no missile failures - in line with the South Korean military assessment.

"In accordance with worldwide law, the United States would not need South Korean approval [or] cooperation to strike the North with our own offshore military assets", the general said.

U.S. Army soldiers prepare their military exercise in Paju, South Korea, near the border with North Korea, Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017.

At least one of them flew about 250 miles before crashing into the sea, South Korean military leaders said. The North routinely says it will never give up its weapons programs, saying they are necessary to counter perceived US hostility.

South Korea has also been testing new missiles of its own, including the 800-kilometer (497 mile)-range Hyunmoo-2. Although North Korea claims that it is having the ability to send missiles on United States mainland, U.S. defense officials said that these short-ranged missiles did not threaten North America or Guam.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Trump has been briefed and "we are monitoring the situation".

But US Pacific Command said that they believed the projectiles to be ballistic missiles.

"Whether or not Kim Jong-un's field guidance lands in North Korean news relies heavily on propaganda concerns", said the South Korean government source.

Tens of thousaands of USA and South Korean troops have been taking part in Ulchi Freedom Guardian since Monday.

"The United States and South Korea are close allies sworn to uphold each other's security, and certainly the U.S.is committed to South Korea's security on the peninsula", said Michael O'Hanlon, a foreign policy expert at the Brookings Institution.
