5-Alarm Fire Tears Through Building in Tribeca

5-Alarm Fire Tears Through Building in Tribeca”

Lower Manhattan has filled with acrid smoke from a large fire in a building just a few blocks from the World Trade Center.

The FDNY says it was called to the building at 24 Murray St., near Church Street, at around 6:30 p.m.

A massive fire ripped through a Tribeca building Friday evening. Smoke and flames could be seen shooting from the roof of the five-story structure.

A total 44 units and 198 firefighters responded to the dramatic, five-alarm blaze, officials said.

There is believed to be a target range in the basement stored inside but Sakowich said that the fire never reached that part of the building.

Fire department officials tweeted out a report that said the blaze was under control at about 10 p.m. The flames then ran up through the duct, spreading to all five floors. It started to billow out through the windows on the sides'. "As the fire continued up it broke out on each floor", said Chief Roger Sakowich, FDNY.

11 firefighters suffered minor injuries from smoke inhalation to lacerations.

The smell of smoke carried all the way to Brooklyn as the building burned just one block away from City Hall.
