Arizona Cardinals cut Chris Johnson

Arizona Cardinals cut Chris Johnson”

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, running back Chris Johnson, who signed a one-year deal to come back to Arizona for a third season, has been released.

As recently as Monday, Johnson, who turns 32 on September 23, remained optimistic that he'd make the Cardinals' 53-man roster, despite two fumbles in Saturday's preseason game against Atlanta. Johnson didn't look particularly good this preseason, carrying 13 times for 41 yards (3.2 yards per attempt) and a fumble.

His release apparently means Andre Ellington and Elijhaa Penny will join David Johnson and kick/punt returner Kerwynn Williams as running backs on Arizona's 53-man roster. He had each of his past two seasons cut short by injury after not missing a game due to injury in his first seven seasons.

Johnson had been limited to just four games last season after he suffered a groin injury in Week 4 that need surgery.

Chris Johnson is just 463 yards shy of 10,000 yards rushing for his nine-year pro career.

He set the National Football League single-season mark with 2,509 yards from scrimmage, helping him earn the Offensive Player of the Year award and his only First-Team All-Pro selection.
