Dell Technologies Championship 2017: Dustin Johnson Leads After Round 1”

Dustin Johnson recorded an eagle to highlight a 5-under-par 66 on Friday to seize a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the Dell Technologies Championship in Norton, Mass.

Johnson overturned a five-shot deficit in the final round before beating Open champion Jordan Spieth in a play-off in the Northern Trust Open on Sunday, the first of four FedEx Cup play-off events.

"When you win, you're playing well, so it gives you a lot of confidence", Johnson said.

"For me, that was one thing that was probably lacking a little bit the last few months - just the confidence, just because I wasn't seeing the shots that I wanted to see". I was so focused on the line I completely forgot about the speed and hit it about 10 feet by.

"I'm a big believer that it is a little bit horses for courses like you hear, and Boston is definitely a track that sets up well for me", McIlroy said on Thursday.

"But you know, after last week, obviously I've got a lot of confidence now".

Kevin Na, Luke List, Brian Harman, Jason Dufner, Jonas Blixt and Grayson Murray are a shot further back, a stroke ahead of the likes of Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson. Three-time Masters victor Phil Mickelson, South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen and 2014 US Open runner-up Rickie Fowler are three shots off the lead after posting two-under 69s.

The long-hitting American, who leads the FedExCup standings, mixed a bogey with two birdies over his next four holes before a steady finish.

"I sort of find myself in a similar position this week as I was past year, needing a good week to sort of kick-start the next few weeks", said McIlroy. "I made some nice putts here and there early on".

"Hopefully I can find that little spark that I found previous year and go on and play well from here until the Tour Championship".

Kyle Stanley, the victor of the Quicken Loans National, and Marc Leishman shot 4-under 67s in the morning wave to finish a shot behind Johnson.

Spieth is six shots off the pace following his opening-round 72, while Thomas is even par heading into Saturday.

McIlroy won here previous year and in 2012 to become one of just two players, along with Fiji's Vijay Singh (2004, 2008) to win this event a couple of times.

Grouped with Spieth and US PGA Championship victor Justin Thomas for the first two rounds, Johnson holed five birdies and an eagle to set the tone at TPC Boston.

The battle for golf supremacy is down to the top 100 golfers and McIlroy is up for the challenge at the par-71, 7,342-yard course located about 40 kilometres (25 miles) southwest of Boston, Massachusetts.
