North Korea 'explosion' points to nuclear test”

"The institute recently succeeded in making a more developed nuke", the report said, adding: "He (Kim Jong-un) watched an H-bomb to be loaded into a new ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile)".

"The hydrogen bomb, the explosive power of which is adjustable from 10 kilotonne to hundreds kilotonne, is a multi-functional thermonuclear nuke with great destructive power which can be detonated even at high altitudes for super-powerful EMP (electromagnetic pulse) attack on strategic goals", KCNA reported.

The US State Department had no immediate reaction.

Hydrogen or H-bombs, also known as thermonuclear weapons, work on fusion and are far more powerful, with a nuclear blast taking place first to create the intense temperatures required.

North Korea "has ignored the global community's widespread opposition, again carrying out a nuclear test".

The US Geological Survey said a magnitude 6.3 tremor struck near a weapons test site in the northeast of North Korea.

"After examining the data we concluded that it was a nuclear test", Foreign Minister Taro Kono said at a briefing broadcast by public broadcaster NHK following a meeting of Japan's National Security Council.

In China for the BRICS meeting, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for restraint in response to the test. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists that Putin "said the global community could not give in to emotions, should act calmly and deliberately, and stressed that the complex settlement of the nuclear and other problems of the Korean Peninsula can be achieved exclusively through political and diplomatic means".

Analysts said the ICBM tests could put much of the U.S. mainland within range, including Los Angeles and Chicago. "Talking is not the answer!"

Both leaders condemned North Korea and expressed their support for a tightening of European Union sanctions against it.

The nuclear test was widely condemned, with South Korea and Japan both calling for new United Nations sanctions on North Korea.

In a statement, US Pacific Command said the flyover was a "direct response to North Korea's intermediate range ballistic missile launch". What he called South Korea's "talk of appeasement" would not work as "they (the North Koreans) only understand one thing!"

North Korean state media claimed a day later that the missile launch was a prelude to more military operations directed at the USA island of Guam in the Pacific.

Meanwhile, commentary Friday in the Rodong Sinmun newspaper, the official mouthpiece of North Korea's Workers' Party of Korea, called on the United States to recognize the North as a nuclear power if it wants future diplomatic efforts to make headway.

The move could give South Korea more independence from the United States to react to the threat from North Korea, analysts say. There is also scepticism about the North's claims to have developed a hydrogen bomb, which is more powerful than an atomic bomb.
