Putin condemns North Korea nuclear test, appeals for calm”

Secretary of Defense James Mattis (L) makes a statement at the White House on a possible military response to the recent North Korea nuclear test, with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford on September 3, 2017 in Washington, D.C.

Mattis said the US will answer any threat from the North with a "massive military response - a response both effective and overwhelming".

President Donald Trump threatened to increase economic sanctions and halt trade with any nation doing business with North Korea, and his defense chief said the United States has "many military options" after the regime said it successfully tested a hydrogen bomb with "unprecedentedly big power". Japanese and South Korean officials said the tremor was about 10 times more powerful than the one picked up after North Korea's previous nuclear test a year ago.

In Seoul, President Moon called for new United Nations sanctions to "completely isolate North Korea".

Pyongyang raised tensions in July with two successful tests of an ICBM which apparently brought much of the USA mainland within range. "But as I said, we have many options to do so", he added. "We are not looking to the total annihilation of a country, namely North Korea, but as I said, we have many options to do so", Mattis said.

North Korea has made a stunning jump in progress for its nuclear and missile program since Kim rose to power following his father's death in late 2011.

"We have continued to see signs of possibly more ballistic missile launches". The U.S. also suggested some other ideas earlier this summer, including air and maritime restrictions and restricting oil to North Korea's military and weapons programs.

Ahead of the North's test, photos released by the North Korean government showed Kim talking with his lieutenants as he observed a silver, peanut-shaped device that was apparently the purported thermonuclear weapon destined for an ICBM.

That is why some questioned Trump's jab at South Korea.

His handling of Pyongyang's latest nuclear test reflected a more traditional approach to crisis management, which USA officials said illustrated the influence of Mattis and new White House chief of staff, retired Marine Corps General John Kelly. The North Koreans, he added, "only understand one thing", implying military force might be required.

Still, Trump's response was more orderly and less haphazard than he had offered to other provocations by North Korea.

Trump has previously vowed to stop North Korea developing nuclear weapons and said he would unleash "fire and fury" if it threatened USA territory.

North Korea gets the bulk of its oil from China, its main ally and trading partner, and a lesser amount from Russian Federation.

"Denuclearization is not a viable US policy goal", said Richard Fontaine, president of the Center for a New American Security, but neither should the USA accept North Korea as a nuclear power.
