Rahul targets PM Modi, says media is 'meek' under him”

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi kicks off his Gujarat Assembly election campaign here on Monday with a direct dialogue with party activists from across all the 182 constituencies, in keeping with the party's focus on strengthening and revving up the organization. In his address, he said the Gujarat model of development has failed and underlined that the Congress would surely win the assembly elections in the state.

The Congress vice-president will be on another four-day tour of central and south Gujarat regions later but the dates are still being finalised.

"I want to say this to every tribal of Gujarat that we will fulfill the promise of your land and your rights", he said.

Gandhi answered 10 pre-selected questions from thousands of workers from all the 182 constituencies.

He asked party workers to fight against the BJP at the booth level and expose the saffron outfit's "lies". While Modi has given Tata Rs. 36,000 crore as bank loan and Rs. 60,000 crore in total for their Nano project, which is twice the debt of Gujarat's farmers.

Except two questions - one on whether candidates with muscle and money will continue to get the tickets and what the party do if senior leaders try to defeat own party candidates - the other questions were framed in a way that gave Gandhi the chance to attack the ruling BJP. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) works on the ideology of benefitting the corporate, whereas the Congress works for the welfare of the farmers, the poor and the weak.

Gandhi also alleged that be it health or education, all the sectors have become business as the BJP have converted them to private from public units. Gandhi expressed confidence that Congress will be able to make a comeback in the state and form government. Besides, not entire media has been bought.

Indicating that there are curbs on the media, Rahul said there are many who wanted to write against the government but are scared or they are beaten up as it is the rule of a "dictator".

Buoyed by Ahmed Patel's win in the Rajya Sabhha elections, Gujarat Congress is looking to come back to power in the state after almost two decades.
