SpaceX finishes testing Falcon Heavy's first stage cores

SpaceX finishes testing Falcon Heavy's first stage cores”

The test in the wee hours of Sep. Its design was first unveiled in 2011 but a series of setbacks have delayed the launch. It can lift more than twice as much as the next closest vehicle, at a third of the cost, according to SpaceX. Falcon Heavy draws upon the proven heritage and reliability of Falcon 9.

In the tweet, the company says that three first stage cores have completed their testing, and showed off a video of a static test of one of the cores.

The Falcon Heavy, which is due to launch in November, is much bigger than the company's commercial rockets so far, and will be able to launch up 140,000 pounds of cargo into orbit.

Rocket without encapsulated vehicle was rolled out from hangar to the launch site; ground service team connected power and fueling lines reporting no problems with fueling process. It is considered a successor to NASA's all mighty Saturn V heavy lift rocket.

It will be equipped with three cores, making for a total of 27 Merlin engines to generate 5.13 million pounds of thrust at lift-off.

That SpaceX would test an entirely new rocket using refurbished components may be the most remarkable part of the Friday test, demonstrating a truly unflinching commitment to the premise of reusability that Musk hopes will eventually make trips to Mars affordable for at least some civilians. It made 12 launches so far with eight more scheduled before the year ends.

The Indian space agency also hopes to develop its own frugal shuttle, as it seeks to cash in on a huge and lucrative demand from other countries to send up their satellites, after a successful test launch last month. So far, Russian Federation only made 11 launches and its space agency is right to be afraid of such fierce competition.

Reusable rockets would cut costs and waste in the space industry, which now loses millions of dollars in jettisoned machinery after each launch. We can only begin to imagine what marvelous things SpaceX will achieve in the next five to ten years.
