Conservative MEP secures Irish passport because he is 'ashamed to be British'”

Charles Tannock, a Conservative Party MEP for London, said today that he is "very grateful to Ireland" after being granted a passport by virtue of his grandmother, who was born in Dublin in 1895.

A Conservative MEP has said he is "ashamed to be British" and has secured an Irish passport in response to the Brexit result. I was not getting it to use it now.

Mr Coveney said Ireland is in "a uniquely vulnerable position" because of Brexit and faces potentially "extraordinarly negative" impacts.

Tannock said his interest in his Irish past was always at the back of his mind but has now been reignited. You can also apply for Irish citizenship if one of your parents, while not born in the island of Ireland, was an Irish citizen at the time of your birth.

Charles Tannock hits out at Conservative 'arrogance and hubris'. She got hers in Paris.

"It has been awakened by Brexit because, to be honest, I am quite ashamed to be British in many ways", he said. The British government could have gone for the softest option, to stay in the single market, in the customs union, there would be none of the problems with the Northern Irish border which I warned about during the referendum campaign.

A report by The Irish Times quoted Paul Dwyer as saying: "There are concerns from the business and cyber security communities about the implications Brexit will have on existing cyber security, privacy, and data protection laws".

There is no obligation for people who gain Irish passports to give up their British passports - they can instead become dual citizens.

A Tory MEP has got himself an Irish passport as he wanted to ensure he was a EU citizen after the United Kingdom finally leaves the economic union after the Brexit deal is finally agreed.

Outgoing Irish ambassador to London, Dan Mulhall, said his government was expecting to issue twice the number of Irish passports in the United Kingdom this year compared to 2015, the last pre-Brexit year.

"Potential applicants should take time to establish the facts in relation to their entitlement".
