Sweden will Deport 106-year-old Afghan Woman

Sweden will Deport 106-year-old Afghan Woman”

Her family have appealed for her to live out her final days in Sweden, but the Swedish migration agency have ruled Ms Uzbeck's hometown of Kunduz is safe enough for the entire family to return to despite ongoing clashes with the Afghan army and the Taliban.

Sweden is set to deport a blind, 106-year-old Afghan refugee.

Bibihal Uzbeki, who can barely speak, made the unsafe journey to Europe in 2015 with her 17-member family, and was carried on the backs of her 67-year-old son and a 19-year-old grandson through mountains, deserts and forests, AP reported. Her family has appealed against the rejection, the first of the three she is allowed, in a process that can take a long time.

After two years, Uzbeki lives with her family consisting of 11 members in a small village of Hova, in central Sweden.

The Swedish Migration Agency has confirmed its decision on the case and said that age by itself does not provide grounds for asylum. The woman, carried by her son and grandson, endured the risky trip to Sweden, crossing mountains, deserts and forests.

The rejection letter was received by the family during the month of Ramazan. While the family avoided telling her, the constant grief from her granddaughters made her suspicious.

In a 2015 report from the Associated Press, Bibihal Uzbeki, then 105, spoke of reaching a refugee camp in Croatia partly on a stretcher: "My legs hurt, but I'm fine", she said. Many European countries do not give asylum to Afghans from areas of the country considered safe. But she said numerous big cities cited as safe are not at the moment.

The family had been living illegally in Iran for eight years before making the journey to Europe. They left Afghanistan because of an ongoing war and insecurity, but Mohammed Uzbeki said it is hard to prove that the family faces a specific enemy if they return.

The centenarian, from Kunduz, Afghanistan, had crossed from Serbia with a large group of refugees, including her son, grandson and other relatives.

"She still can not speak properly, she has hallucinations", he laments.
