BBC to review salaries across corporation amid gender pay row

BBC to review salaries across corporation amid gender pay row”

The BBC will launch a salary review of presenters and rank and file staff in an attempt to quell anger sparked over the corporation's gender pay gap.

Speaking about the BBC's autumn priorities on Wednesday, Hall addressed the issue of fairness and pay at the corporation, which he said was a "big priority".

When asked if he was shamed by the pay gap exposed by the figures, Hall said at the time: "I'd say I am reinvigorated in achieving equality by 2020 between men and women".

"These are hard and often deep-rooted challenges, and they are not unique to the BBC, but I see this as a moment of real opportunity for us", Director General Tony Hall said in a speech on Wednesday. It's based on the whole picture across the organisation, and the causes tend to be structural, and societal.

"The director general must be in no doubt about how serious an issue equal and fair pay is for women across the organisation", said a group of female BBC employees including high-profile TV and radio presenters.

The source said Lord Hall had pledged "nothing is off the table", adding: "It's going to be open, transparent and independent". "I also recognise that you'll judge this by what we do and not just what we say".

Hall gave no details about how exactly the gender pay gap would be tackled.

PwC is already conducting a review for the BBC about the disparities between World Service staff and the rest of the news department - which is another major pay row at the broadcaster - but the work of the firm is now thought to be wider this.

"We need full transparency".

"The BBC should be the standard-bearer for this in the media", they said in a statement on Wednesday, calling for solutions to rectify injustices to be put in place before the end of 2017. Our aim is to change things for women in broadcasting now, and to encourage and reassure young women coming into the industry whatever their role.
