Britain's Queen Elizabeth opens Scotland's third Forth bridge

Britain's Queen Elizabeth opens Scotland's third Forth bridge”

"It is an honour to have Her Majesty The Queen opening the new bridge for Scotland's communities, just as she she opened the Forth Road Bridge, linking Fife and the Lothians".

The Forth Bridge, a red railway bridge on the UNESCO World Heritage List, was opened in 1890 in Britain's first massive steel building.

It swung back into action to enable more than 60,000 people to walk over new crossing - including almost 10,000 local people yesterday - and its official opening by the Queen on Monday, the anniversary of her opening the original bridge in 1964. Barriers deflect the wind and shield vehicles from the huge gusts common on the Forth.

The state-of-the-art engineering feat needed 35,000 tonnes of steel for the superstructure and 150,000 tonnes of concrete.

Although the completion of the project was delayed ten weeks, but its cost of 1.35 billion pounds ($ 1.75 million) was less than its budget of 235 million pounds.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh met Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon, who said the nation is "bursting with pride" over the 1.7-mile crossing - the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world.

The second Forte Bridge was opened in 1964 and is now used primarily for the transit of public transport vehicles.

Mark Arndt, Forth bridges unit account director for Amey, which runs both bridges for the Scottish Government said: "The Forth Road Bridge has provided a vital link in Scotland's strategic road network for 53 years, carrying over double the weight and volume of traffic its designers anticipated".
