Chinese universities move up in global ranking”

Queen's University Belfast (QUB) has maintained its place in the Times Higher Education (THE) world university rankings for 2017/18.

The UK is home to the top two institutions in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for the first time in the 14-year history of the table.

More than half of Japanese universities' annual revenue comes from government expenditures, but national funding for higher education declined by 12 percent between 2004 and 2015, researchers said. But this year, IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur have toppled down from 401-500 club to 501-600.

The UAE saw improved rankings in this year's World University Rankings, with Khalifa the standout performer, shooting to the 301-350 band.

On top is the University of Oxford, followed by University of Cambridge and the California Institute of Technology.

Newcastle University rose 15 places to claim 175th spot.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was the highest ranked institute from the country.

Times Higher Education, a leading British magazine, used 13 performance indicators to rank 980 universities from 77 countries. Caltech is now joint third with its U.S. compatriot, Stanford University. In the past, the varsity was ranked between 276-300 in 2015, between 251-300 in 2016 and between 201-250 in 2017.

The calculation of the rankings for 2018 has been subject to independent audit by professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), making these the only global university rankings to be subjected to full, independent scrutiny of this nature.

"The rankings highlight what is at stake if we can not agree a sustainable way to properly fund our universities, we fail to welcome global students, and if the research funding and academic talent that comes to us from the European Union is cut off", he said. However, the latest ranking reveals that Pakistani universities have not fared well. South Korea's three universities in the top 200 have dropped from their positions, same goes for Taiwan with National Taiwan University, falling three places to joint 198th.

The highest-ranking Canadian school is the University of Toronto (U of T), which didn't move from the No. 22 spot it held a year ago. "It's clear from our many worldwide relationships with top institutions and universities around the world that we are considered an innovative and forward-looking partner".
