Disney's Live-Action 'Aladdin' Casts Billy Magnussen as New Character”

Power Rangers actress Naomi Scott will play princess Jasmine, with Murder on the Orient Express actor Marwan Kenzari playing villain Jafar and Will Smith taking on the role of Genie. But now a new role has been created that didn't exist in the original animated film, and a white American actor has been tasked with playing it.

Get your makeshift magic carpets at the ready, because we have an update on the live-action Aladdin: The upcoming film is going to feature another brand-new character.

Guy Ritchie is directing Aladdin, which will draw inspiration from the 1992 animated movie and the folk tale of One Thousand and One Nights fame. He'll also act alongside Saturday Night Live alum Nasim Pedrad as another original character, a handmaiden and friend of Jasmine's named Mara.

Magnussen is no stranger to playing Disney princes, as he previously appeared in Rob Marshall's Into the Woods as Rapunzel's Prince, in which he performed the oft-imitated "Agony" duet with Wonder Woman star Chris Pine. Magnussen's small-screen work includes Netflix's Black Mirror, Epix's Get Shorty and FX's The People v. O.J. Simpson, in which he played Kato Kaelin. The script is by John August (Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory).

Up next, Magnussen will star opposite Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams in the New Line comedy Game Night. He is repped by WME, Anonymous, BRS-Gage and Sloane Offer.

This isn't the first time that "Aladdin" has come under fire over its casting decisions, aside from the false Tom Hardy news earlier this year.
