Mercedes-Benz Vans and Daimler Mobility Services Invest in Via”

Lamparter already oversaw a range of new business areas for the Daimler Group, including car2go, mytaxi and relatively recent partnerships with outside companies. The fusion of Vias technology with the engineering of Mercedes-Benz Vans creates the flawless match for efficient, affordable and sustainable ride-sharing.

Daimler AG said its Mercedes-Benz Vans division will invest $50 million in a joint venture to expand Via's shuttle service into Europe.

Daimler AG, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz AG, today inked a partnership with Via Transportation Inc.to launch a joint carpooling service in Europe.

Via now operates in New York, Washington, and Chicago, and services 1 million riders a month.

As part of the partnership, Via will use Mercedes vans to launch its service in London before expanding to additional European cities.

Large vans may not be the staples of suburban family garages, but the are experiencing a resurgence thanks to new ride-sharing platforms. “Via is one of the most successful providers in the growing ride-sharing sector while Mercedes-Benz Vans has the flawless vehicles that are being continuously optimised for this job.

The latest investment is part of a larger fundraising round for Via. “We are thus further expanding our digital mobility services. By digitizing our financing and mobility services, we can transform our business processes to meet the needs of current and future customers. Daimler states that using Via's technology, which it calls "intelligent shared rides", passengers heading in the same direction can share the same van, which will be provided by Mercedes-Benz. The company will provide Arriva and Keolis with transport solutions.

Via works with passengers requesting rides through a mobile app, which finds a vehicle that best matches the passenger's route, allowing for quick and efficient shared trips without detours that take riders out of their way. The joint venture between Mercedes-Benz Vans and Via will operate as a new entity with headquarters in Amsterdam.

Through the joint venture, Mercedes-Benz Vans and Via will bring Via's on-demand shuttle service, already operating in New York, Chicago and Washington D.C., to European metropolises.

In smaller towns, Via will license its on-demand shuttle software to public transit operators to help ease congestion, Ramot added.
