Temple University students react to arrest in Jenna Burleigh murder case”

The last time she was seen was on surveillance video leaving a bar near the school campus in north Philadelphia.

A former Temple University student, Joshua Hupperterz, 29, was charged with the murder of the student Jenna Burleigh, 22, who was missing since Thursday night.

Burleigh's father reported her missing after he could not get in contact with her, the police said.

On Friday night, police discovered Hupperterz in Hawley in northeastern Pennsylvania, around 140 miles far from Philadelphia, and he was arrested, police said.

Inside Hupperterz's North Philadelphia home near the bar, police allegedly found blood and large quantities of drugs, according to

Then, using a Lyft auto service, Hupperterz transported Burleigh's remains to a shed at his grandmother's property in Paupack Township, Wayne County, investigators said. Apparently, she was likely killed in Philadelphia, then transported to Hupperterz's mother and stepfather's home in Jenkintown, then moved again to a home in Paupack Township.

She was later killed in his apartment, officials said.

Sanctuary Police examiners addressed Hupperterz via telephone, and as indicated by Philadelphia police, Hupperterz professedly told the police "that he had been so smashed when he cleared out the bar he had no memory of who he had been with". Aside from murder, Hupperterz also faces charges for abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence, drug offenses, and possession of an instrument of crime.

The first thing that went through her mind when she learned the Temple University student was murdered was how that could have been her.

Police do not think Burleigh and Hupperterz knew each other prior to their encounter at Pub Webb.

"Our Beautiful Angel Jenna is now in Heaven", Ed Burleigh wrote.

"A lot of people have distrust of locals and "stranger danger" and somebody with a Temple t-shirt, you relax a little bit", Pettis said.

A woman listed as the owner of the Wayne County home where Burleigh's body was found paid his bail during those initial charges, according to court records.

"I'm not surprised that he did this because he made me feel sick to my stomach when I was in his presence", she said.

"I didn't like the way he spoke to other people".

"She was an exuberant person", friend Danielle Halteman said according to the Daily News.

"My thoughts were all over the place because i just spent a year saying "hey" to this guy", said Abulhawa about the killing.

Court records show Hupperterz's preliminary hearing has been scheduled for September 20.

Joshua Hupperterz, 29, is accused of beating and strangling Temple University student Jenna Burleigh to death.

"I wanna know why she ended up going to the guys house", Pettis said.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to Jenna's family and her classmates, both here at Temple and at Montgomery County Community College", said Englert.

Temple is offering on-campus counseling 8:30 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, at Tuttleman Counseling Services.

TSG and Student Activities will also host a vigil for Burleigh on Thursday, but have not determined the time yet, Student Body President Tyrell Mann-Barnes said.
