Trump administration ends DACA: 5 things to know

Trump administration ends DACA: 5 things to know”

On Tuesday, lawmakers from IL and Missouri responded to President Trump's announcement.

Nearly 800,000 young immigrants who were brought to the US illegally as children or overstayed their visas could see their lives upended with the ending of DACA.

Brad Smith, president and chief legal officer of Microsoft, said Tuesday that while he believes Congress should now prioritize DACA over tax reform, Microsoft should be prepared for the possibility that Congress will not act in the next six months. Young immigrants who were brought to the country illegally as children but who have criminal records were barred from the program. "My future is here".

Trump later insisted he had "great heart for the folks we are talking about, a great love for them" and called on Congress to pass wide-ranging immigration reform - something lawmakers have tried and failed to do for decades.

"It's kind of tough because when something like this happens, it's like, what am I working for?"

The program was created through an executive action by former U.S. President Barack Obama in August 2012. "It's a political decision, and a moral question", Obama said.

During last year's presidential campaign, the two men bonded over their hawkish views on immigration, and Sessions became the first senator to endorse Trump.

"While new applications for work permits will not be accepted, all existing work permits will be honored until their date of expiration up to two full years from today", Trump said.

DACA is an immigration program implemented in 2012 by the Obama administration.

Senior Department of Homeland Security officials admitted that the addresses and other sensitive information provided by current permit holders would be kept on record indefinitely.

"Simply put, if we are to further our goal of strengthening the constitutional order and the rule of law in America, the Department of Justice can not defend this type of overreach", Sessions said, reading from prepared remarks during a briefing at the Justice Department where he refused to take reporters' questions.

Obama said the decision to end DACA was politically motivated in a statement posted on Facebook on Tuesday afternoon.

But elsewhere, Trump's decision was met with broad opprobrium.

"I do not favor punishing children, most of whom are now adults, for the actions of their parents".

"I feel like we didn't fight hard enough, but we did and it's not fair", Lizbeth Luna said as she cried into her friend's shoulder.

"We warned you not to threaten our neighbours, @realDonaldTrump".

However, DACA was never the permanent solution, so the fate of Dreamers is now in the hands of Congress, she said. "In short, if Dreamers who are our employees are in court, we will be by their side".

Meyers surmised: "So you have a president needlessly tormenting hundreds of thousands of Americans with a cruel and capricious policy that is supported neither by a majority of voters nor by the leader of his own party".

Much of the business world, especially the high-tech firms of California's Silicon Valley, stood firmly against a DACA repeal. The people who fell under the DACA program, known as Dreamers, had to have finished high school or gotten a GED certification, have been honorably discharged from the military or still be in school. "In the absence of any immigration action from Congress to fix our broken immigration system, what we've tried to do is focus our immigration enforcement resources in the right places".

However the politics unfold, in many ways, the program's future may also lie with the youth themselves, if they can leverage the power that DACA has enabled them to seize.
