Wildfires In Yosemite, Glacier Park Threaten Iconic Spots, Disrupt Holiday Travel

Wildfires In Yosemite, Glacier Park Threaten Iconic Spots, Disrupt Holiday Travel”

The Sprague Fire is estimated to be around 9,400 acres, with dense smoke. The combination of low relative humidity, high temperatures, high winds and "extremely dry fuels" led to spotting outside of the fire's perimeter. That area of the fire is spreading east/northeast back toward the main body of the fire.

An evacuation order is now in place for all residents and visitors from the south end of Lake McDonald to Logan Pass.

The Sprague Fire Incident Management Team made the recommendation to order evacuations in preparation for forecasted high east winds, which could increase activity on the west side of the Sprague Fire.

The current evacuation area includes the Lake McDonald Lodge area, the Sprague Creek campground, the Avalanche Campground and about 55 residences.

The fire is burning in high elevations - areas not usually capable of sustaining high-intensity fires, according to reports on the federal wildfire information website, InciWeb. The Lake McDonald Lodge is closed for the season, and some scheduled operations, including horseback tours and boat rides have been adjusted due to smoky conditions. Paxton said crews were improving containment lines, and they appeared to be holding the blaze.

An evacuation center has been set up at the LDS Church in Stevensville. The fire is partially contained and has forced the evacuation of a small town.

The fires Sunday caused evacuations in Glacier National Park in Montana and many other parts of the West; compelled crews to rescue about 140 hikers who had spent the night in the woods after fire broke out along the popular Columbia River Gorge Trail in OR; and led firefighters to step up efforts to protect a 2,700-year-old grove of giant sequoia encroached by flames near Yosemite National Park in California.

A sudden gusty series of rainstorms allowed Los Angeles, however, to cancel evacuation orders for a wildfire that the mayor called the largest in the city's history and sent beach umbrellas and toy shovels bouncing down Southern California beaches late Sunday.

All evacuees are welcome at the shelter, and all Red Cross services are free.

Structure protection crews are working to protect Lake McDonald Lodge if the fire reaches it by setting up plumbing systems with pumps and hoses. Residents can expect to see fire personnel and engines in the area.

The fires have disrupted holiday travel and hampered firefighters during a Labor Day weekend that capped a devastating summer in which an area larger than Rhode Island (3,140 square kilometres) has burned.
