BBC creates interactive radio story for Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant speakers

BBC creates interactive radio story for Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant speakers”

The plays are being developed alongside BBC R&D (that's' research and development, kids) in association with production company Rosina Sound.

It reminds us a choose-your-own-adventure story; as you listen via an Amazon Alexa speaker or Google Home device, you'll hear options that allow you to choose what happens next. It's a storytelling medium which doesn't seem to lend itself much to technological least, if you're anybody but the BBC. Remember, when we started talking back to the web, we called it Web 2.0 - so is this Radio 2.0?

Smart Speakers like Google Home are about to get some interactive content with the BBC announcing they will begin producing interactive stories based on traditional audio dramas.

The blog explains: "In this pilot, you're actively playing a part in the story, using your own voice - we wanted to make it feel like you're having a genuine, direct interaction with the other characters in the piece".

The story will be produced in a "Choose Your Own Adventure" style format with chunks of audio played before the listener is given a choice such as 'would you like to go down the stairs or through the door?' of what to do next.

The experience will be available on both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa when it first launches, but the engine it's built on is cross-platform, meaning there's the possibility that it could come to more voice assistants in the future.

"As far as we know, there aren't many people developing cross-platform voice experiences in this way." says Auntie.

In addition to simply looking at what existing audio dramas have done well, the BBC has also pulled a great deal of inspiration from games like The Stanley Parable and Papa Sangre (an audio-only horror game).
