Cox and Hearst retransmission impasse moves to blackout stage

Cox and Hearst retransmission impasse moves to blackout stageā€

The two sides have been unable to cement a new contract like professionals, and have resorted to the blackout and public bickering stage of the proceedings, familiar to many frustrated cable TV customers in the current cable TV era.

In a news release, WDSU parent Hearst Television said the impasse comes after it offered a five-day extension to Cox in the hopes of reaching a deal.

KETV's programming stopped being carried on Cox systems late Tuesday and returned Wednesday.

Hearst Television owns and operates local television and radio stations serving 26 media markets across 39 states reaching over 21 million US television households. Also, officials said, Hearst offered an additional three-day extension, but Cox refused the offer.

Cox said Hearst pulled its signal "because we would not agree to pay double the price we now pay", and refused the company's offer to extend the most recent deal for an additional two weeks while negotiations continue. Hearst had earlier run-ins with Dish Network, as well as AT&T's DirecTV and U-verse platforms. They want more money than we pay any other station.

As is common in such disputes, each side blamed the other.

"We continue to negotiate and hope to come to an agreement as soon as possible, " Peck said.

"We are disappointed that Cox has refused our customary offer to extend our agreement, especially during this period of severe weather", said Hearst Television president Jordan Wertlieb.

"We are very pleased to once again have KHBS/KHOG providing Cox customers the quality local and national programming that we invest so highly in for our local communities", said Oswald. "Hearst Television has made significant investments to deliver premier programming, including critical local news and weather programming like the type we have provided during Harvey and the post-hurricane relief efforts". "In the meantime, viewers should visit www.coxcommitment.com to learn other ways to watch". "You may continue to receive our station for free, over the air, and where available from your local cable or satellite operators".
