Darjeeling unrest: CID issues warrant against GJM chief”

In yet another blow to Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leadership, a district court in West Bengal on Wednesday issued arrest warrant against eight of its leaders including party chief Bimal Gurung.

The arrest warrants are expected to help Bengal police carry out raids in Sikkim in search of Gurung. The GJM leaders named in the warrant were booked under sections 147-149 (rioting with arms and unlawful assembly), 153-153A (promoting enmity between different groups), 323-326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 332-353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant), 436 (mischief by fire and explosive substance), 506 (criminal intimidation), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and a few other sections of IPC. The Sikkim police had claimed that their counterparts could not furnish relevant documents, including arrest warrants, against the Morcha leaders.

"The warrants have been issued by Chief Judicial Magistrate Darjeeling on the prayer moved by the CID on Tuesday".

Apart from Mr Gurung, his wife and Mr Giri, those against whom the arrest warrants have been issued by the state detective agency are Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leaders: Prakash Gurung, Amrit Yonzon, Ashok Chettri, D.K. Pradhan and Tilak Roka. The Bhanu Bhawan case was registered at Sadar police station in the Darjeeling hills.

The CID recently issued a lookout notice against Mr Gurung and two other Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leaders in connection with the violence in Darjeeling.

On June 8, GJM supporters had demonstrated outside the Raj Bhavan in Darjeeling in demand of Gorkhaland when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was presiding over a cabinet meeting, attended by several ministers and senior state bureaucrats.

A section of officers claimed they had gathered evidence to show how the Morcha supporters had turned up well-armed on the fateful day to attack the police and Gurung allegedly didn't stop them from preparing for a pitched battle.
