Doctors' strike: Relations hire ambulances to evacuate patients from LUTH”

It can be recalled that the Federal Government expressed "deep shock and utter disappointment as Resident Doctors began an indefinite strike to press home their demand for better pay".

"The doctors have breached section 18 of the Trade Dispute Act, which states that once a conciliatory starts between the government and its employee, no party is allowed to take any further action", he said.

Newsmen that visited the hospital observed that patients were receiving attention from only the consultants and nurses on duty.

"It is a nationwide strike".

The National Association of Resident Doctors on Thursday refused to call off its strike despite holding a 13-hour meeting with representatives of the Federal Government.

Patients in admission at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Idi Araba are being evacuated by their relations to private institutions for proper treatment.

Meanwhile, patients in the hospital have appealed to the government to as a matter of urgency resolve with the NARD members to call off the strike.

Resident doctors are doctors practising in secondary and tertiary hospitals as part of their postgraduate studies.

"This is even because the doctors who usually attended to the patients are on strike, but we have some consultants who have come here to render skeletal services to patients, " she said.

The correspondent, however, reported that the Out Patient Department (OPD) remained shut.

NAN reports that the Accident and Emergency Unit, which was always busy on normal day, was scanty as well as other units including the Gynaecology and Paediatric Units.

Sani said that patients were suffering because of the strike, lamenting that he has spent more than four hours waiting to see a doctor.

"I am the next in line to see the doctor; a patient is seeing him now and when he is done, I am next, " he said.
