GOP leaders 'visibly annoyed' when Ivanka Trump crashes Oval Office meeting”

President Donald Trump sided with Democrats on adding a three-month extension of the USA debt limit and government spending to a hurricane-relief bill over the arguments of fellow Republicans, who pressed for a longer debt extension.

At first, in Wednesday's Oval Office meeting, the Republicans lobbied for an 18-month debt ceiling extension, then 12 months and then six, but Trump waved them off.

Democrats announced the deal just before the House of Representatives passed $8bn (£6bn) for Harvey victims.

"We could have done a one-year deal today", Mnuchin told reporters aboard Air Force One later in the day en route back to Washington from an event in North Dakota where Trump spoke about taxes.

The White House and Republican lawmakers had been pressing for a long-term extension to the so-called "debt ceiling", but instead got three months when Trump backed Democrats' short-term fix.

The White House requested $7.85 billion for emergency Harvey aid and called for Congress to raise the debt ceiling immediately.

"Both sides have every intention of avoiding default in December and look forward to working together on the many issues before us", Schumer and Pelosi said in their statement.

Trump interjected and sided with the Democrats, eventually sealing the deal with a three-month suspension of the limit, a three-month funding bill, and a package for Hurricane Harvey relief.

This is the Donald Trump many Republicans feared.

Other congressional Republican sources argued this wasn't just the President undermining GOP leaders politically, but ultimately on policy. House Republican hardliners, who welcomed a looming budget crisis, didn't want any debt measures in the bill at all.

"We'd been asking for bipartisanship so the President took everyone at his word so give him credit for that". His administration has made it clear it wanted quick action on the debt ceiling, which is expected to be reached later this month.

Barely an hour earlier, Ryan had slammed the Democrats' demand for a three-month extension as "ridiculous and disgraceful".

Meanwhile, congressional Republicans are left fuming.

Political observers have long wondered whether the president-who has supported Democratic candidates in the past and has had a contentious relationship with his own party-might find a way to start making deals with the opposition.

At the beginning of the White House meeting, Trump put aside his own previous harsh words for the two Democratic leaders and thanked them for being there.

After McConnell last month said Trump had "excessive expectations about how quickly things happen in the democratic process", Trump discussed the possibility of McConnell leaving his post if he failed to make good on legislative goals such as healthcare, tax cuts and infrastructure legislation.

The survey found that, overall, 43 percent of voters in the United States say Trump is doing enough, while 40 percent say they believe he is not.

Trump also expressed optimism that Congress could forge a deal on undocumented immigrants who came to the children.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he would add the three-month extension agreement to the Harvey relief bill coming to the Senate floor.

The relief package comes as a more powerful storm, Hurricane Irma, barrels toward Puerto Rico and Florida.

Republicans have always been anxious that Trump, who at times was a registered Democrat, would look to cut deals with the opposition party to secure victories - which he has had trouble achieving even with a Republican-led Congress.
