IBM and MIT partner on artificial intelligence research”

The new MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab will gather more that 100 scientists, professors, and students to do research at the university's campus and at the technology giant's nearby offices in Kendall Square, MIT said in a news release.

IBM AND THE Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are partnering on a $240m AI research centre that will look into how smart technology can save lives and stop security blunders. "True breakthroughs are often the result of fresh thinking inspired by new kinds of research teams. Yet today's AI systems, as remarkable as they are, will require new innovations to tackle increasingly hard real-world problems to improve our work and lives", said Dr. John Kelly III, IBM senior vice-president, cognitive solutions and research, in the statement. "Both MIT and IBM have been pioneers in artificial intelligence research, and the new AI lab builds on a decades-long research relationship between the two".

Healthcare diagnostics and clinical decision support are among the lab's top priorities. Impact of AI on several industries explores the economic as well as ethical implications of AI on society.

The Cambridge, Mass. -based lab will be led by Dario Gil, vice president of AI for IBM Research and Anantha Chandrakasan, dean of MIT's engineering school.

"It's used in just about every domain you can think of and is central to diverse fields, from image and speech recognition, to machine learning for disease detection, to drug discovery, to financial modeling for global trade".

AI algorithms: Expand capabilities in machine learning and reasoning.

"This new collaboration will also provide a framework for aggregating knowledge from different domains. We intend to develop the next generation of AI algorithms using accelerated computation, achieved through our mastery of physics, which we apply ethically and in pursuit of shared prosperity, e.g. for better health outcomes and a safer future".

The establishment of the new joint lab also builds on the joint multi-year collaboration announced by IBM and MIT's Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences last September that aimed to create AI that can better understand sight and sound the way humans do. "We will focus on basic research and applications, but with new resources and colleagues and tremendous access to real-world data and computational power".
