Labour widens lead over National in new poll

Labour widens lead over National in new poll”

National has taken a dip in the latest 1 NEWS Colmar Brunton Poll, trailing four points behind Labour at 39 per cent.

New Zealand holds a general election on September 23.

Jacinda Ardern has nearly single-handedly changed the chances of her Labour Party since taking over as leader last month, with her charisma and popularity offsetting some criticism over vague tax plans and tighter immigration policy. Significantly, Labour would be able to govern with either New Zealand First and their 11 seats, or the Greens - with six seats - and the Maori Party's two seats.

With 61 seats needed to form a government, Labour and New Zealand First could do it with 64 seats.

The poll, released on Thursday, shows National is continuing to drop.

The Opportunities Party, the Māori Party and New Zealand First all climbed one percentage point, sitting at 2 percent, 2 percent and 9 percent respectively.

Duncan said the Greens were "perilously close" to the 5 percent voting threshold below which you do not get a seat in parliament. They would need the support of both NZ First and the Maori party for government.

The two major party leaders locked horns in the Stuff Leaders Debate tonight.

"If you continue to maintain that then you're maintaining a lie".

That poll was released on Sunday, the day before the Newshub Leaders Debate.

Meanwhile Labour, after soaring since Jacinda Ardern became leader, has remained steady on 43 percent.
