Modi meets Suu Kyi, discusses India-Myanmar relations”

Highlighting that Prime Minister Modi will visit several places of cultural and historical interest, including the Shwedagon Pagoda, which is the most sacred and famous Buddhist site in Myanmar.

Prime Minister Modi also presented the country's President, U. Htin Kyaw, a reproduction of a 1841-map of a stretch of the River Salween (that flows from the Tibetan Plateau into the Andaman Sea) and a sculpture of the Bodhi tree.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today met Myanmar's State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and the two leaders discussed ways to further cement the bilateral relations.

"India's democratic experience is relevant to Myanmar and therefore, the Election Commission of India and the Myanmar Press Council are the institutions which we have agreed upon for comprehensive cooperation programmes in capacity building". Myanmar is one of India's strategic neighbours and shares a 1,640-km-long border with a number of northeastern states, including militancy-hit Nagaland and Manipur. "Prime Minister Modi with the State Councillor Aung San Suu Kyi", External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted.

"The citizens of Myanmar, who wish to visit India will be given gratis visas, and 40 Myanmarese citizens in the Indian jails will be released", PM Modi announced.

"Together, we will ensure that terror is not allowed to take roots in our country, on our soil or in our neighbouring countries", she said.

"The prime minister and leaders will discuss more importantly how India can play a role what kind of contribution India can make", he said. "There is a good cooperation between the two sides", he added. "We need to further strengthen what we already have, what we built up at the time of our Independence 70 years ago", Kyi added.

The Suu Kyi-led National League for Democracy had won a super majority in Myanmar's general elections in 2015 paving the way for the country's first non-military president in 54 years.

"Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose made the clarion call of "Give me blood and I will give you freedom" in Myanmar and thousands of men and women responded", Modi said while addressing the Indian diaspora here.

Asserting that India's relationship with Myanmar has always had a very long development cooperation component; High Commissioner Misri said both countries will review all projects that India is working on.
