North's nuke test more powerful than Hiroshima bomb

North's nuke test more powerful than Hiroshima bomb”

Atomic weapons like those previously tested by North Korea rely on nuclear fission to release energy - basically splitting atoms.

Pyongyang's Sunday test of what it described as a hydrogen bomb designed for a long-range missile triggered global alarm and has divided the worldwide community as it scrambles for a response.

Commercial satellite imagery obtained the day after the test "appears to show numerous landslides throughout the Punggye-ri nuclear test site and beyond", according to 38 North, a website run by the U.S. -Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University.

The underground blast on Sunday caused a 6.3-magnitude natural disaster, according to the US Geological Survey, and was followed a few minutes later by another with a magnitude of 4.1, leading to suggestions that the rock over the site had caved in, potentially releasing radioactive material into the atmosphere.

South Korea's Unification Ministry said the government was on the lookout for any signs of radiation.

Regarding radioactive materials that may have been released into the atmosphere, South Korea's Unification Ministry said on September 6 it is closely monitoring for signs.

It was also noted by 38 North that there has not been any evidence of a collapsed crater as might have been suggested from the post-test tremor.

Nuclear detonations release radioactive material that can stay in the environment for decades.

"We are watching the situation closely due to the seriousness of harm caused by possible radiation leaks", the spokesman, Baik Tae-hyun, told reporters on Wednesday.

Japan yesterday again upgraded its estimated size of North Korea's latest nuclear test to a yield of around 160 kilotonnes - more than ten times the size of the Hiroshima bomb.

"This is far more powerful than their nuclear tests in the past", Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said. Japan has put it at 120 kilotons, eight times the size of the USA device that destroyed Hiroshima in 1945.
