NY to file lawsuit to protect DACA recipients”

A coalition of 16 Democratic and nonpartisan state attorneys general filed suit in NY federal court on Wednesday to stop Trump's sunset of DACA - the Obama-era program that protected young undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children from being deported - and they say Trump's comments about Mexicans should be used against him.

The move gives Republican lawmakers who control Congress the opportunity to establish a permanent plan allowing undocumented immigrants who were brought to America as children to remain in the country legally.

Here is a breakdown of what is known and what remains unclear.

Attorney General Xavier Becerra, a Democrat, said Wednesday he is going ahead with his own lawsuit because one in four participants in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program lives in California and the state will suffer the greatest harm from its termination. "The Dreamers are now left in a six-month limbo, during which Congress is supposed to pass comprehensive immigration reform, a feat they have been unable to achieve for a decade", he said.

What happens in six months?

President Trump even Tweeted on Tuesday that he would revisit the issue if Congress can not act.

Will Trump step in with a solution?

Several legislative proposals to put elements of DACA into law have been introduced in Congress.

And the voters are right: Our immigration laws and enforcement need to be fixed.

There have been no exceptions to the ruling announced.

About 2,800 Iowa residents have been approved for the program, with another 3,100 having submitted applications as of March, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services data.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said that DACA recipients are "not a targeted priority".

"They are not targets - they are certainly not priority targets of this administration".

Are they expected to deport themselves?

An ultimate end to the program - where DACA recipients are not given amnesty -would result in a 700,000 job stimulus for American workers.

The missive came in a document obtained by ABC News that was provided to members of Congress in the aftermath of the Trump administration's decision.

Many Democrats and some Republicans, along with US business leaders, have strongly criticized Trump for overturning DACA, former President Barack Obama created by memorandum when Congress failed to act on immigration reform.
