Oklahoma's ACT scores drop as record number takes test”

More Oklahoma high school students than ever are taking the ACT college-readiness exam before graduation, which reflects a major push meant to place more students on the path to a four-year college degree.

Of the Vermont graduates who said they knew what they wanted to study the careers included nursing, medicine, biology, business administration and management, and education. The same was true of 2016 ACT test-takers; however, only 75 percent of those 2016 graduates actually enrolled. That compares with composite scores of 22.4 for white students and 21.6 for Asian students.

The ACT tests students on their reading, English, mathematics and science skills as a measure of college readiness.

A flawless score is 36.

"Those students may not have taken an ACT exam if not for the statewide testing program".

Using the ACT as a gauge of performance allows the school to make consistent comparisons from year to year, Korta said.

Opening the college entrance exam to all students gives the department "valuable insight into the skills gap we must overcome for our young people to be competitive nationally", state schools Superintendent Joy Hofmeister said.

New results from the nation's most widely used college admission test highlight in detailed fashion the persistent achievement gaps between students who face disadvantages and those who don't.

39 percent of 2017 graduates met three or four of the Readiness Benchmarks, up from 38 percent in 2016, but down from 40 percent the year before.

Oklahoma met only one benchmark score, the 18 benchmark in English.

In STEM, a particularly rigorous benchmark created from students' math and science scores, only 2 percent of the students who met all three underserved criteria reached the college-ready benchmark, but 31 percent of the more-advantaged students met it. Educators and policymakers have been urging students to consider careers that demand science, technology, engineering, and math skills, since those jobs are increasingly in demand and can pay well.

Students in South Carolina's class of 2017 scored slightly better on a college readiness test than students the year before, according to ACT's annual Condition of College and Career Readiness Report, released early today.

"What our education system is doing now is not working well enough for far too numerous country's young people", said ACT Chief Executive Officer Marten Roorda.

In addition, the state ranks 10th of 17 states where all students take the exam.

Test scores increased in almost every racial and ethnic group.

Just 31 percent scored college ready in all four subjects, a 2 percentage point increase over previous year and higher than the national average of 27 percent.

"While we have made progress over the past year, we have significant ground to cover in order to meet our goal that every student graduates prepared for success", she added.

Nationally, the number and percent of Hispanic students taking the ACT continued to rise in 2017.

But he'd like to see more improvement in high school students' scores on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments, or MCAs, which are given in grades three through eight each year and once in high school. Of that number, 4,691 took the test only once.
