Putin warns of 'global catastrophe' in N Korea impasse

Putin warns of 'global catastrophe' in N Korea impasseā€

Both Russia and the USA have been trading diplomatic volleys, mostly expressed in kicking out some of the other country's envoys and diplomatic staff.

Peskov said that these actions would lead to a further deterioration of bilateral relations, adding that they also undermine worldwide law. "Let's see how efficient the much praised USA judiciary is". But there's nothing you can do about it. "Probably such is the level of political culture of a certain part of the USA establishment".

In talks overnight, US President Donald Trump and South Korea's Moon Jae-in agreed in principle to scrap a warhead weight limit on the South's missiles, which are now capped at 500kg (1,100lb), giving it a greater strike force against North Korea.

In comments carried by Russian news agencies, Putin said Trump is "not my bride, and I'm not his groom".

Putin also distanced himself from President Trump when asked if he was disappointed with Trump, who since the presidential campaign has been outspoken about his desires to improve ties with Russian Federation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that North Korea's Kim Jong Un would have his people "eat grass" before giving up his nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.

Moon's trip to Russian Federation follows North Korea's latest and sixth nuclear test staged Sunday.

Mr Moon had called for Moscow to support stronger sanctions against Pyongyang, which conducted its sixth nuclear test on Sunday in what it claimed was a detonation of a thermonuclear weapon built for intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the U.S. mainland.

The president condemned the expansion of North Korea's nuclear arsenal, referring to the country's recent tests as a "provocation".

"But resorting to just any sanctions in this situation is useless and inefficient", he said.

Putin called for dialogue and warned against other actions that could escalate the crisis. "It could lead to global catastrophe with lots of victims".

Liu urged the parties to agree to a Chinese-Russian plan calling for the North to freeze its missile and nuclear tests and the US and South Korea to suspend joint military exercises. In addition to that, she said that the United States is considering halting any trade with countries that have dealings with North Korea.

"It's ridiculous to put us on the same list [of sanctions] as North Korea and then ask for our help in imposing sanctions on North Korea".

On Monday, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Kim was "begging for war" and urged the UN Security Council to adopt the strongest sanctions measures possible to stop Pyongyang's nuclear program.

Another issue of utmost concern for both Russian Federation and the U.S. where the two have room for cooperation is the ratcheting up of tensions on the Korean Peninsula, Antonov added, describing the North Korean problem as "a great challenge" for Moscow as well as for Washington.
