Starbucks names Rosalind Brewer COO

Starbucks names Rosalind Brewer COO”

Brewer, who was already serving as a member of the retailer's board, will start in her new role on October 2.

Earlier this year, Johnson was named Starbucks CEO, after company founder Howard Schultz was named executive chairman.

Holding the COO position puts Brewer just one step below president and CEO, Kevin Johnson, The Seattle Times reports.

Johnson starting discussions with Brewer about an executive role in the company about two months ago, after she had joined the board and was participating in deliberations about future plans for the coffee chain. "She has been a trusted strategic counselor to me ever since she joined our board of directors, and I deeply value her insight, business acumen, and leadership expertise".

Brewer brings complementary expertise to other senior leaders including Starbucks veterans John Culver, Group President, International and Channels, who will lead the businesses in EMEA, China Asia-Pacific, and Channel Development and Cliff Burrows group president, Siren Retail, who leads the development of the Starbucks Roastery, Reserve, and Princi operations.

"Ms. Brewer has a wealth of experience in retailing, consumers and [consumer packaged goods] markets", Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData, told CNBC via email.

Brewer, who resigned from Wal-Mart Stores (wmt) unit Sam's Club in January, will be responsible for Starbucks' operating businesses across Canada, the USA and Latin America, as well as the global functions of supply chain, product innovation, and store development organizations. "She is also used to running large, complex organization with a global focus".

"As a passionate customer of the brand and recently elected board member, I have a deep love and admiration for the Starbucks brand and its people". "She also did a lot in terms of e-commerce and multichannel, and this experience will be valuable for Starbucks". Brewer was No. 19 on last year's Fortune Most Powerful Women list.

"Those skills are transferable, especially when you look at the kind of growth Starbucks is having", Brewer said in an interview.

Not only will she have a high ranking role, but according to a regulatory filing, Brewer will earn an annual base salary of $1 million, and will receive both a signing bonus of $1 million and an equity award of $7 million.
