Trump agrees to 'good deal' on spending, debt

Trump agrees to 'good deal' on spending, debt”

"I think that's a ridiculous idea", the Wisconsin Republican said about the idea proposed by Democratic leaders, adding that a short-term debt limit increase would not benefit people in Texas and Louisiana who have to deal with the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey. "I support my president". NPR's Scott Detrow reports from the Capitol.

Republicans at least for now have to deal with newly resurgent Democrats, who have been virtually powerless since Trump became president and Republicans maintained their hold on Congress.

Wednesday at a press conference, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said President Donald Trump agreed with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to raise the debt ceiling through December 15.

DETROW: McConnell is now supporting the deal. Here's what was on the table. His administration has made it clear it wanted quick action on the debt ceiling, which is expected to be reached later this month. Leaders on all sides agreed to do that alongside an $8 billion Harvey relief measure the House passed earlier in the day.

Democrats were almost giddy after finding a surprising new ally during the White House meeting with leaders of both parties. We've got another unprecedented hurricane hitting - about to hit Florida. And they want to play politics with the debt ceiling?

DETROW: Ryan has his political motivations, too.

The moves buys nearly three months for Washington to try to solve myriad issues, including more funding for defense, immigration, health care, and a longer-term increase in the government's borrowing authority. He brushed aside calls from Republican congressional leaders and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin for a longer extension to the debt limit.

"McConnell is a master of the Senate and he could and should be Trump's biggest asset", the Republican said. The Democrats stuck to three.

Trump seemingly agreed, telling reporters aboard Air Force One that he would be open to signing such legislation. We essentially came to a deal. It's something he campaigned on throughout 2016.

"You want to go blow up the majority leader, that's your prerogative, but it doesn't get your agenda done". And that's part of being a dealmaker. Given all of that, it was notable how Trump described the meeting to reporters.

Trump also hinted there could be a deal reached to protect so-called "DREAMers", after his administration announced the end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program which puts in limbo the fate of 800,000 young people who came to the US illegally as children and now could face the possibility of deportation.

DETROW: No mention of Ryan or McConnell.

Conservative groups were aghast, accusing Trump of caving in to the Democrats rather than insisting on spending cuts to accompany the debt ceiling increase, and some hard-line Republicans expressed opposition to it. And we're very glad the president accepted it.

"We have many, many things that are on the plate".
