Avro Arrow test model located in Lake Ontario

Avro Arrow test model located in Lake Ontario”

A Canadian search-and-recovery mission says it has successfully found a flight test model of a Cold War-era supersonic interceptor jet.

The Arrow was a fighter jet developed in the 1950s that was lauded as a groundbreaking technological achievement before the program's controversial cancellation by the Diefenbaker government in 1959.

Burzynski said from the beginning his team tried to "stay out of re-writing the history of the Arrow", but he suspects the project was cancelled in 1959 due to budget.

The Avro programme is a "story of a realisation of dreams, of accomplishment", he said. Images show orange paint, a hallmark of the treasured Canadian technology, still intact and peeking through the zebra mussels that nearly entirely cover its surface. The Arrow was a symbol of Canadian manufacturing excellence.

Background The Avro Arrow free-flight models were launched over Lake Ontario in a series of flights conducted between 1954 and 1957. The nine free-flight models were only one-eighth the size of the actual Avro Arrow planes, which measured 24 metres long with a 15-metre wingspan.

Dave Shea, the vice-president for Krakken, the sonar technology used in the expedition, said the battery-powered remote controlled vehicle is preprogrammed with a mission to map the seabed. We could measure it in the sonar, it's a delta wing, both wings are there.

St. John's based Kraken Sonar has been involved in the discovery of a model of the fabled Avro Arrow on the bottom of Lake Ontario.

"The public has always shown a keen interest in the story of the Avro Arrow".

"Proper archaeological examination, recording and preservation work is the next order of events with the model." says Janusas.

The discovery is a promising start for the team, which launched its search effort in July, but has been hampered by poor weather conditions.

Before the end of the season, the team plans to send divers into the lake to do a reconnaissance dive, said Scarlett Janusas, the expedition archeologist.

The object will likely be retrieved next spring, at which point more information about its place in Arrow history is expected to come to light.

Any of the free-flight test models that are eventually recovered will be housed at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa and the National Air Force Museum of Canada in Trenton, Ontario.

Canada made history March 25, 1958, the day the Avro Arrow flew for the first time.
