Former Vol Berry may be out for season with Achilles injury”

PREVIOUS STORY: Former Vol great Eric Berry is having an MRI on Friday to check the extent of an Achilles injury he suffered Thursday night during the Chief-Patriots game, Kansas City announced Friday.

Berry was taken off the field in the fourth quarter of the Chiefs victory on a cart after injuring his Achilles tendon.

"I don't think it's positive", he said. Last season, Berry tied his career high with four interceptions and returned two of them for touchdowns to tie for the National Football League lead in that category.

Berry suffered the injury while covering New England tight end Rob Gronkowski in the fourth quarter.

With Berry's injury not looking good for his long-term prospects, the Chiefs may have to go at it without their safety next week when they host the Philadelphia Eagles in their home opener.

The gloom and doom talk makes Berry's season appear over but the Chiefs want to wait until the All-Pro safety finishes his medical tests. A cart removed him from the field.

Berry made seven tackles (one for a loss) before leaving the game. In 2014, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma after complaining of chest pains following a game against the Oakland Raiders.

Kansas City's defense and offense outplayed the defending Super Bowl champions in the second half, outscoring New England 28-10 after halftime. He got rewarded in the offseason with a new contract worth up to $78 million over six years.

Playing the role of spiritual leader is all Berry can do for the Chiefs for the rest of 2017. His career numbers include 429 tackles (361 solo), 5.5 sacks, 14 interceptions (five return TDs), 53 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
