TransCanada mulling pipeline options after regulatory review

TransCanada mulling pipeline options after regulatory review”

"The Board is of the view that the requested suspension will have minimal consequences on potential participants in the hearing and on the Projects' review process", wrote the Board's secretary, Sheri Young, in a September 8, 2017 letter to TransCanada that was posted on the NEB website.

"Start working with the National Energy Board to try to get things back on track, start working with TransCanada to tell them that New Brunswick is open for business".

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, the proposed Energy East pipeline would transport 1.1 million barrels per day of mostly tar sands oil from Alberta to St. John and would bring a significant increase in carbon pollution-the equivalent to the annual emissions of as many as 54 million passenger vehicles-and lock in high-carbon infrastructure expected to operate for at least 50 years.

"Deciding the merits of a pipeline on downstream emissions is like judging transmission lines based on how its electricity will be used", she said.

"Throughout the past year, investors have frozen or abandoned Canadian projects and taken all potential jobs with them", she said.

Black said there is a real risk that TransCanada will drop the project because it can't get it done under the NEB's new rules.

The premier said he also spoke with TransCanada chief executive Russ Girling after the suspension was announced.

The first two projects are gone for good, after frustrated proponents moved on to less-intrusive jurisdictions.

McCuaig-Boyd says Alberta's Climate Leadership Plan should satisfy concerns about upstream emissions.

Eastern Mainline is a proposal for 279 km of new pipeline in Ontario.

"It's not just Northwatch", she said.

"And people across the country whose jobs depend on this will look at this as an example of extreme incompetence by an ideological Liberal government that is opposed to development of the energy sector, writ large". Malaysia energy company Petronas in July said that, as the head of a partnership, it was no longer pursuing a liquefied natural gas project at Port Edward in British Columbia because of an "extremely challenging environment" brought on by a weak market.

But the company indicated on Thursday that it was hitting the brakes on Energy East due to the new guidelines proposed by the NEB. The pipeline could offset regional imports of 700,000 barrels of oil per day, though critics countered it would serve primarily as an export project.

"To have these storm clouds hovering over the project is very concerning", he said. Clearly, with 100,000 oil and gas workers out of work, Energy East was a step too far even for the left-leaning provincial government. "When will Atlantic Liberal MPs stand up for their region and fight for this project?" said Mr. Moore.
