Airlines Mark Down Tickets in Irma-Affected Areas Following Complaints

Airlines Mark Down Tickets in Irma-Affected Areas Following Complaints”

American Airlines is reportedly capping its departure tickets at $99 from September 10 until September 13.

Airlines capped prices on tickets departing from much of Florida and the Caribbean, after customers complained that seats on the few flights that remained this week ahead of Hurricane Irma were far more expensive than usual.

Delta Air Lines has added 2,000 extra seats, including approximately 1,100 in Ft.

The Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando airports handled more than 115 million passengers in 2016.

The airlines service has reportedly announced that until September 10, no direct flight originating from Florida will be more than $99, and any flight that has another connecting trip will be capped at $159.

In a statement to Money, AA confirmed it had added 16 flights to Miami and added more than 3,600 seats on a "limited availability".

After that point, the airport will be closed due to Hurricane Irma.

Hurricane Irma, one of the largest storms to ever form in the Atlantic has already caused destruction and loss of lives in the Caribbean.

The territories of St. Barthélemy, Barbuda and Anguilla had earlier been badly struck, with more than 50% of residents left homeless and without communication or power.

A hurricane impacting a hub airport like Miami puts a strain on airlines out of that hub as well as the airport.

And a spokesperson for United Airlines told reporters it added six new flights out of Miami to its hubs.

AP added that United expects to cancel most flights to and from southern Florida from Saturday through Monday.

Friday alone, 12 flights of both domestic and global origin were canceled due to poor weather conditions.

At Key West International Airport, all air carrier operations will be suspended after the last air carrier flights depart Thursday, Don DeGraw, airport director, said in a Facebook post. The Fort Worth-based carrier said it has canceled more than 2,500 flights as of Friday stretching through September 11.

By noon on Thursday, Miami International had canceled 120 flights and Fort Lauderdale International had canceled 48 according to Flightaware.com. Miami-bound flights arriving on Friday from Europe and South America were canceled.

In response to the growing allegations that airlines were taking advantage of the impending hurricane, several airlines have capped the prices on their remaining tickets.
