Another Reason To Evacuate Downtown Miami: Construction Cranes

Another Reason To Evacuate Downtown Miami: Construction Cranes”

Residents in Miami who live in the shadow of the city's two dozen construction towers were told Tuesday to evacuate by the mayor for safety.

Construction sites across Miami have also been put on lockdown, so materials that could potentially fly off can be removed or secured.

A construction crane collapsed and fell onto a nearby building as Hurricane Irma blasted South Florida with hurricane-force winds.

And because those cranes weren't created to withstand a storm of Irma's ferocity, city officials are telling people who live in the shadows of the giant lifting devices to leave.

"A tower crane has collapsed on top of a high rise under construction at 300 Biscayne Blvd".

"The answer - it's a slow process that can take about TWO weeks and there is NOT enough time", the post read.

The cranes are created to withstand winds of up to 145 miles per hour. "Consider that the counterbalances on tower cranes weigh about 20,000 to 30,000 pounds".

Deputy director of Miami's building department, Maurice Pons, advised those in buildings next to the cranes to leave.

"If we get a direct hit, the widespread damage is not going to be done by a crane failure", Whiteman said.

As the city of Miami said in its news release about the risk, "The crane's arm has to remain loose; it is not tied down".

Late yesterday, Miami-Dade County issued a mandatory evacuation order for its coastal cities, including Miami Beach, and the city is continuing its preparation efforts by clearing the downtown harbor, closing public parks, and supplying sandbags for flood protection efforts. Irma is now a Category 4 storm, but it's bringing maximum sustained winds of 150 miles per hour - and gusts of more than 180 miles per hour - as it churns toward Florida's coast.
