ASUU Set to Suspend Three-week Strike

ASUU Set to Suspend Three-week Strike”

As the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Friday accepted the proposals tendered by the Federal Government which are in line with its requests, the intermittent and age-long strike of the union might just be on its journey to an end. "And like the Honourable Minister of Labour has said, we plan to come back here to take decisions as advised by our members", Ogunyemi said.

He said the agreement was signed in 2009 but yet to be implemented.

Sahara Reporters learned the meeting which started about 1:38 pm on Thursday, ended around 2:15 a.m on Friday, after an agreement was reached between government representatives and members of the striking lecturers.

Ngige also said: "We last met on August 17 and we agreed you would get back to your members and you would give us your proposal".

"We also discussed the issue of how the Federal Government could be involved in the running of state universities", Ngige said.

ASUU had at the beginning of strike told newsmen after an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council held at the University of Abuja, that the industrial action was unavoidable.

The third meeting, however, comes a day after the non-teaching staff unions of Nigerian government universities resolved to embark on an indefinite strike.

He said that the unions were left with no better option but to proceed on the strike after a series of letters, written to the government on the pending issue of the implementation of the MOU, were ignored.

"Our demands includes, the payment of earned allowances to our members, a review of the governance system in our universities".

The minister of education Adamu Adamu, said ASUU's demands have been addressed and the union will get back to the government in a week after consulting with its principals.
