Best Buy has stopped selling security software from Russian firm”

Best Buy Co., the No.1 US electronics retailer, is pulling Kaspersky Lab's cyber security products from its shelves and website, amid concerns that the Moscow-based firm may be vulnerable to Russian government influence.

The big box retailer, with stores across the country, did not announce the change itself but its website was no longer offering Kaspersky products, and numerous social media reports said they were not on store shelves anymore.

Best Buy confirmed to the Star-Tribune that it has stopped selling the products, but didn't comment further.

Company e-mails from Kaspersky that have surfaced in the media in recent months have also raised suspicions of a link between Kaspersky and the Kremlin.

"However, the relationship may be re-evaluated in the future", it said in a statement.

The products, Kaspersky Internet Security, has received largely positive reviews from Best Buy users with a 4.3 star rating among more than 1,800 reviews. Its products, which are sold for between $40 and $100, are one of three internet security software brands the retailer carries. The company has said that it considers itself a victim of geopolitical strife between the United States and Russian Federation.

In July, the US Senate Armed Services Committee specifically proposed prohibiting the Department of Defense from utilizing Kaspersky Lab products, "due to reports that the Moscow-based company might be vulnerable to Russian government influence", while the Committee on Science, Space and Technology for the US House of Representatives requested that all 22 government agencies share their documentation and communications regarding the company, according to a report from Reuters.

United States lawmakers are seeking to introduce a ban on the government's use of Kaspersky's software.

In July, it strongly denied those insinuations. Jeanne Shaheen, D-New Hampshire, noted that six top intelligence officials, including the heads of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Central Intelligence Agency recently testified that they would not be comfortable with Kaspersky Lab software on their agencies' computers.

But he said Russian Federation and China are increasingly treating his and other USA cyber security firms with intense suspicion and constricting their market access.

The US company will also have its staff uninstall the software for free within that window of time, it added.
