Bundesliga Creates History With First Ever Female Referee

Bundesliga Creates History With First Ever Female Referee”

Mathew Leckie continued his stunning start to his Hertha Berlin career, scoring the opening goal in the Bundesliga team's 1-1 draw against Werder Bremen on Monday (AEST).

In August, Steinhaus also officiated Bayern Munich's first round German Cup victory over Chemnitzer and she has been selected this season among the 24 referees of the championship of Germany.

The development follows Lorraine Watson becoming the first female referee in Scottish men's football on Saturday, when League Two Edinburgh City defeated Berwick 1-0.

Matthew Leckie scored his third goal in as many games to give Berlin a 38th-minute lead, but Thomas Delaney equalised on the hour to earn Bremen their first point of the season. She has been refereeing since 2007 and officiated the women's Champions League final this year plus the 2012 women's Olympic tournament final in London.

The 38-year-old referee made the step up after six years in Bundesliga 2 and her top-flight debut went without incident or controversy.

On her flight as a referee in the Bundesliga, Bibiana had earlier said, "I never planned, and still don't today, to break new grounds of emancipation".
