Federer eases past Kohlschreiber to set up Del Potro clash

Federer eases past Kohlschreiber to set up Del Potro clash”

Del Potro, the 2009 U.S. Open champion, is looking for his first title of the year.

Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber has yet drop a set in NY and the 33-year-old reached his fourth U.S. Open round of 16 with a 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 win over Aussie John Millman. The two faced off at the same stage at Flushing Meadows previous year where the Austrian retired midway through the match with an injury.

Stephens is convinced that her run to the US Open semifinals is not proof that she is back to being as good a player as she was before foot surgery took her off the tour for almost a year. "It's all good. No problems there", said Federer, who did not face a break point.

Men's fourth round: No. 12 Pablo Carreno Busta beat Denis Shapovalov 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3); No. 17 Sam Querrey beat No. 23 Mischa Zverev 6-2, 6-2, 6-1; No. 29 Diego Schwartzman beat No. 16 Lucas Pouille 7-6 (3), 7-5, 2-6, 6-2; No. 28 Kevin Anderson beat Paolo Lorenzi 6-4, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4. "Maybe I will have the chance to play Roger again in this tournament, which is special for me".

"I feel like I would probably win it somehow because I should have been up maybe 2-0 or should have been up 2-1". "Before, obviously, I was playing well". It was a good match. A lot of back and forth. That's what I did in the end, just keep fighting. I came here trying to play the best I can and then when I see this crowd cheering for me, I was trying to play better every game.

Having lost the first set in 36 minutes, and after receiving medical treatment, the former champion finally hit his first victor in the 12th game but then wasted three break point opportunities. "Started in the day, finished in the night".

That has had an effect on his two-handed backhand, to be sure, but the righty swing that produces massive forehands and serves is still intact - as Federer himself noted at his news conference and on Twitter.

With the raucous crowd behind him, the Argentine saved two match points and rallied to take it to a decider, coming through 1-6 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-1) 6-4.

When a reporter relayed to del Potro that Federer had spoken glowingly about him, del Potro responded: "Well, of course, I admire him, too".
