Flooding in Haiti after Irma strikes

Flooding in Haiti after Irma strikes”

Irma, considered the most powerful Atlantic Ocean hurricane in recorded history, was bearing down on the northeast Caribbean, following a path predicted to then rake Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba before possibly heading for Florida.

"We feel powerless about what's happening".

Auguste is the executive director of Ottawa's Association culturelle de la jeunesse haïtienne de demain.

"We have very little information today on the impact that the hurricanes may have on the rest of the season on our sun routes next winter", Denis Petrin, chief financial officer of Transat A.T. said during a conference call Thursday to discuss its quarterly results.

Catholic Relief Services officials, for their part, were tracking Irma with an eye on its likely impact on three nations where it works as the overseas relief and development agency for the USA church-the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba.

A police patrol auto gives a warning to the rest of the cars on the road so that they can give way to a caravan of dozens of buses which carry thousands of tourists who have been evacuated from hotels located on the northern coast of the island towards safer areas.

At least two people are confirmed dead after the storm hit the French territorial islands of St. Maarten and St. Barthelemy, according to the French minister for overseas territories, Annick Girardin.

A team of rescue workers airlifted a group of dolphins from an aquarium on an island off the coast of Cuba ahead of Hurricane Irma. Haiti is also still recovering from Hurricane Matthew's 2016 strike and a devastating quake in 2010. Additionally, both a hurricane watch and a tropical storm warning have been issued for Guadeloupe, and a tropical storm warning is in effect for Dominica.

"If a crop is wiped out, if their house is flooded, if they do what most people do here, which is to be involved in small businesses, they will lose all of that".

Liautaud said he's confident that Haitians across Canada will rally together to help their family and friends back home. "WE received absolutely no communication", she said.

"I just spoke to Anaida, it is hard to believe she is getting ready to go through the same thing I just did", she said.

Several of the company's Florida hotels, including the Hyatt Centric Key West, Hyatt Place Marathon/Florida Keys, Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six and Confidante Miami Beach are also closing in advance of Irma.

His brother and sister in Florida have been preparing for the storm to make landfall, stocking up on supplies and barricading their doors and windows.

"Right now, the current trajectory of Hurricane Irma has her passing to our north".

But Auguste said he's especially anxious about his brothers still in Haiti.

Canadian airlines say they're closely monitoring the situation and some are beginning to evacuate travellers.

"People really don't have anything to protect themselves with, and the government can barely protect the population", he added.

"Please get us home thomsascook, from Varadero not back to Cayo Coco".

"We advise that anyone in the area follow the instructions of local authorities and the hotels who are experienced in implementing their own hurricane preparedness plans", a WestJet spokesperson said by e-mail.

The World Bank is now supporting Caribbean countries on disaster risk management and climate change adaptation with an active investment portfolio of US$383 million.
