Marquez celebrates 4th season win at MotoGP San Marino GP

Marquez celebrates 4th season win at MotoGP San Marino GP”

He produced a sublime last lap to pull away from the Pramac Ducati rider, securing his fourth win of the season as he put the disappointment of his DNF at Silverstone behind him to move level with Andrea Dovizioso on 199 points at the top of the MotoGP World Championship.

Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) is seventh - one place higher than his qualifying position past year, when he went on to win - with Friday's fastest Danilo Petrucci (Octo Pramac Racing) taking eighth.

That was just the opening a rider as aggressive as Marquez needed as he went for the kill at the start of the final lap and ultimately finished nearly 1.2 seconds ahead of Petrucci en route to setting the fastest lap of the race.

Petrucci had taken the lead 1/4 of the way through the race when Jorge Lorenzo crashed spectacularly - but apparently without injury.

Marquez fell moments before the chequered flag signaled the end of the session but his best lap was good enough for third.

Rain is forecast for today when Yahama's hopes are focused on Vinales after Italian teammate Valentino Rossi, fourth in the world standings, broke his leg in a training accident.

About as unlikely as either Marquez or Dovizioso taking a chance and trying to pass Petrucci so as to make sure of points and stay in the championship hunt.

The Italian, who has yet to win a race in the top category, then led the next 20 on his Pramac Ducati with Marquez closing in and biding his time before making the move at the start of the last lap.

Meanwile, Dovizioso couldn't match up to the race leaders but defending his position in third. His last lap was also the fastest of the race.

It was Marquez's fourth win of the season.

Completing the top 10 was Q1 pacesetter Alvaro Bautista (Aspar Ducati), ahead of Ducati wildcard Michele Pirro and the second Aspar machine of Karel Abraham. Scott Redding took advantage of other people's misfortunes to bag a steady seventh in front of Alex Rins with Jonas Folger next along.

Johann Zarco had a stroke of bad luck as his Tech 3 Yamaha ran out of fuel on the final corner of the last lap whilst in seventh place.

Yet conditions were still proving problematic, Hector Barbera the latest rider to crash out, the Avintia Ducati rider hobbling away after a nasty slide at high speed.
