Morikawa, Xiong lead U.S. to split in Walker Cup openers

Morikawa, Xiong lead U.S. to split in Walker Cup openers”

For the US, the rest of the strategy is simple: play golf - and better than the GB&I team.

Indeed, the old rogue might even have paused tending to his coterie when he heard the cheers emanating from the Los Angeles Country Club, where the 13th green is adjacent to the nonagenarian's famous residence. In fact, Great Britain and Ireland holds a 17-7 advantage in the format, which accounts for eight of 26 points available at each Walker Cup.

At one point during those singles matches, it appeared the US team might lose five of them. He won five of the last six holes, including the last three.

"I saw guys that reached down and pulled something out and they flipped their matches", captain Spider Miller said. "I'm so proud of them".

"We're having the players in their own thoughts and and hitting the the shot they was they see it".

Morikawa and Xiong, the leadoff pairing, opened with four straight birdies, won the first five holes and beat Harry Ellis and Alfie Plant, 9 and 7, the largest winning margin in an 18-hole foursomes match in Walker Cup history.

Miller makes the rounds to all the matches during the competition, and noticed on his phone the early success of his first group. "I'm watching and the thing is just going ching, ching, ching, and I thought, well, I'm not going out there and mess that up. Those boys are doing fine without me". 2017 U.S. Amateur runner-up Doug Ghim confirmed, offering, "We have been ready since the teams have been announced".

"There's not quite as much strategy in foursomes", Miller said. "But he's a competitor and he told me, 'I'm going to win'". The U.S. players have spent most of their careers playing against each other, except for Ghim and Scheffler, who are teammates at Texas.

Connor Syme and Paul McBride overcame United States Amateur champion Doc Redman and Will Zalatoris 3 and 2 to level the scores before the visitors turned the contest on its head by winning the third tie. McNealy came from behind to beat Europe's highest ranking player, Scott Gregory (seventh in the WAGR), 3 and 1, to close play for the day.

The Britain squad earned only two points in the afternoon.

"You never know what's going to happen", Morikawa said.

"We have been ready to play whenever", said 2017 NCAA champion Braden Thornberry, who will have to wait until the afternoon, where he will open the singles portion of event against English golfer Harry Ellis. Still, the last time a team came back to win after trailing the first day was 2003.

"I think the feeling in the camp is one of disappointment, really", Britain and Ireland coach Andrew Ingram said.

Britain and Ireland need 13 to keep the trophy. "We were down, 5 to 3, at one point". He admits that his game plan could have played a part in the less than stellar performance from the 2015. Will Zalatoris and Cameron Champ, U.S.

It has been a long two years since U.S. Captain and the nation's top amateurs left Royal Lytham & St. Annes disappointed after being defeated by seven points.

2 p.m. - Alfie Plant, GB&I vs. Maverick McNealy, U.S. Norman Xiong, U.S.
