Tesla extends range on cars to help owners avoid Hurricane Irma

Tesla extends range on cars to help owners avoid Hurricane Irma”

Many companies have offered assistance to folks impacted by the recent hurricanes. According to another owner, Tesla said the upgrade will be effective through September 16.

With the flip of a metaphorical switch, automaker Tesla has reportedly given a remote update to some of its vehicles in Florida, helping owners of the electric cars escape Hurricane Irma's devastation on fewer battery charges.

The EV maker has confirmed to Electrek that it temporarily unlocked the full battery capacity on 60kWh Model S and Model X cars in Florida to give them the full 75kWh and help them escape Hurricane Irma. Model S/X 60 (D) vehicles with a 75 kWh battery pack that were previously software limited to 210 miles of driving range per single charge were automatically upgraded to 249 miles, and given temporary access to the full range capacity of the battery.

It's good to know that Tesla has the option of unlocking batteries in special circumstances, especially since buying a permanent unlock could cost several thousand dollars.

Tesla actually has a very robust supercharger network in the state of Florida, but numerous superchargers were busy as owners attempted to head north for evacuation.

Some owners in Florida have noticed that their car's suddenly have an additional 40 miles of range, while the infotainment system has also been updated to 75 or 75D. Tesla apparently felt the added range would alleviate supercharger congestion.
