USA formally requests UN Security Council vote on NK sanctions”

The US is circulating a draft resolution at the United Nations that would bar crude oil shipments to North Korea, ban the nation's exports of textiles and prohibit employment of its guest workers by other countries, according to a diplomat at the world body.

Earlier this week, the US circulated the draft resolution, which calls among other things for imposing an oil embargo on the North, freezing assets of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and banning textile exports from the North.

The statement declined to say what text would be voted on - the original draft Washington first presented on Wednesday, an amended text or another version.

North Korea is under mounting worldwide pressure over its missile and military nuclear programs and has been subjected to an array of United Nations sanctions.

The proposed raft of sanctions would be the toughest-ever imposed on North Korea and seek to punish Pyongyang for its sixth and largest nuclear test.

Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said it was vital to put pressure on North Korea through additional sanctions, including blocking or slowing its fuel supplies. (Russian) "One thing is important for the Russian Federation, along with pressure on the North Korea regime to encourage it to refrain from provocations while carrying out its nuclear and missile programs, we should definitely focus on a political process and make it a top priority". A senior administration official later told reporters that the United States will not allow North Korea to extort or threaten the world with its nuclear program, and that the administration is not sure the country can be deterred.

Pyongyang's nuclear testing and launches using ballistic missile technology violated UNSC resolutions.
