'400 orphanage children buried in mass grave at Lanark'”

HUNDREDS of babies, toddlers and older children from a Catholic orphanage were buried in an unmarked mass grave in Scotland.

At least 400 children are thought to be buried in a section of the St. Mary's Cemetery.

The children were all residents of the Smyllum Park Orphanage run by nuns from the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, according to the BBC News investigation report.

An investigation revealed that approximately 400 children were buried in a mass grave at the Smyllum Park orphanage in Scotland. It closed in 1981.

The burial plot was discovered by former residents of the Smyllum Park in 2003.

Frank Docherty and Jim Kane uncovered the overgrown, unmarked section of St Mary's Cemetery as they campaigned to expose physical abuse which was allegedly suffered by former residents. Both men died past year.

Now, a joint investigation by the BBC and The Sunday Post newspaper has found that number to be much higher - with 402 children thought to be buried in the plot.

Docherty died in April 2017, but his widow Janet Docherty said she was pleased her late husband's suspicions had been proven correct.

Hundreds Of Orphanage Children Suspected To Be Buried In Mass Grave

Records show that most of the children had died of diseases like pneumonia, tuberculosis and pleurisy. Just 24 in total were aged over 15, and most of the deaths occurred between 1870 and 1930. He died in 1961, aged 13; his death certificate indicates he died from a brain haemorrhage.

Eddie never found out what happened to Francis, but was told he died after being struck with a golf club.

"It's ridiculous", he says.

"Whoever is behind this, I hope they can live with themselves", Eddie McColl told the BBC.

An investigation was launched into claims that almost 800 babies and young children died at the Tuam home and were buried in unmarked graves.

The Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry is officially investigating the former orphanage on claims of child abuse. In June, representatives of The Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul gave evidence to the inquiry in June and said they could find no evidence of abuse. Numerous children were buried in an unmarked mass grave at a nearby cemetery.

The Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul said to the Sunday Post in a statement: "We are core participants in the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry and are co-operating fully with that inquiry".

"After so many years of silence, we must now know the truth of what happened here".
